The Art and Healing of Jennifer Barnard

Jennifer Barnard Artist

To step into the world of Jennifer Barnard is to enter a space where art is not merely an aesthetic endeavour, but a vital form of connection, healing, and personal truth. A familiar face at The Locals Co-Create studio time at the Stirling Womens Shed, Jen brings a gentle presence, deep knowledge of art history, and an infectious passion to the easel every week.

The Spark & The Space

For Jen, the drive to create didn’t arrive in a single flash—it is a part of her earliest memories. Growing up watching her mother draw, she immediately felt the pull to follow suit. Even when proper art supplies weren’t at hand, her instinct was to look outward, gathering mud from nature to shape into something new.

Today, her creative process thrives on breathing room and rhythm. Rather than working in strict, linear blocks, Jen prefers to spread out, step away, and return to a piece with fresh eyes. Her inspiration sparks from unexpected places: the avant-garde tilt of French music or the raw Australian outback can instantly trigger a new visual idea.

“Light — Struggle — Liminal.”

— Jennifer Barnard’s definition of creativity in three words.

When she enters her flow state—sometimes in the quiet hours of the middle of the night—she steps away from everyday worries. The world narrows down to pure texture, form, and colour, allowing time to simply slip away.

Rooted in Place, Inspired by the World

Jen’s connection to the local Doubleview and Scarborough area runs generations deep, with family history in the region stretching back to the 1930s. Though she has spent time away, returning brought a grounded sense of belonging. The landscape speaks directly to her five senses:

Rooted deeply in the coastal enclave of Doubleview and Scarborough, Jen’s artistic vision is continuously shaped by the familiar contours of her home. The church perched at the top of the hill near St. John’s stands as a steadfast landmark of her childhood—a quiet anchor amidst decades of evolving suburban landscapes. Down toward the coast, the sensory pulse of Scarborough fuels her creative drive; the low hum of the ocean, ships steadily tracing the horizon over the crest of the hill, and the distant, unmistakable silhouette of Rottnest Island all filter into her work. Yet, this deep local attachment effortlessly coexists with a broader horizon, balancing a profound sense of place in Doubleview with an enduring pull toward European art history and global travel.

A turning point in her artistic journey came through a self-portrait painted from an unexpected perspective—viewing herself embedded in the environment, captured through the reflection of her own glasses. It was the moment when concept and technical skill aligned, confirming her path as a painter.

Art as Healing and Community

Jen’s relationship with art extends far beyond individual practice. With a background as an art teacher and art therapist, she has dedicated years to using the creative process as a tool for recovery, particularly through work with refugees and trauma survivors.

“Trauma is in the body — you can’t always talk about it, but you can paint it.”

While solitary painting is a personal battle with self-doubt, creating alongside others in a community space offers inspiration, safety, and accountability. Whether observing the transformative energy of community arts networks in small towns or guiding local participants in workshops, Jen creates environments where people feel safe to explore and express.

Visiting a Living Gallery: Artists Supporting Artists

Her home itself is a living gallery and a testament to a lifetime spent immersed in the creative world. Stepping inside offers a true representation of how artists deeply support one another—every wall, corner, and nook is filled with paintings and objects collected over decades of artistic exploration. Rather than displaying only her own portfolio, the space is a devoted tribute to the artists she has loved, admired, and connected with along her journey, reflecting a quiet generosity of spirit and a genuine, lifelong reverence for the craft.

Looking Forward: The Next Chapter

Looking ahead, Jen is channelling her extensive background in art therapy into the next Ladies Art Club – supportive, non-judgmental group environment specifically tailored for anyone who feels stuck, detached from their artistic side, or overwhelmed by creative anxiety.

Drawing on her therapeutic experience, Jen will host art activities that gently dismantle the self-doubt and internal barriers that keep people from creating. The workshops focus on breaking down complex artistic concepts into accessible, manageable pieces, offering structured ways to “box you up” into a safe, comfortable space so you can let go and explore. It’s not about perfection; it’s about using creativity to quiet the mind, move past fear, and experience the healing flow of making art together.
